bid you this way,
as azure sea rages...
look here,
as scarlet sun rises.
heathers stretching for another day
come what may,
into the grey-
rain falling softly
clears dismay—
patience is a virtue as we bide
new sunshiney day
on the way

This poem above was written in response to the prompt bellwether:
noun. the leading sheep of a flock with a bell on its neck (an indicator or predictor of something).
Middle English origin.
Of course my creative thoughts go to the current state of society. This poem was penned in September 2025 and a lot has happened since then. It still rings true for me today as much as it did last year.
Now we see daily partisan press conferences by both major parties in the United States. For quite some time, I've made it a practice to read news from "both" sides and strip away the bias to determine the who, what, when, and where on the issues. Naturally, I started listening to pressers from both sides, but not for long.
To me, it seemed like they were both putting a lot of energy into sharing vitriol in order to stoke their bases. From there, the bases for both sides then parrot the catch phrases across socials. The cycle gets repeated again the next day, thus the polarization of the masses continues.
This polarization continues, until more and more people start realizing what is really going and stop engaging with it. More and more people are resisting being swayed by highly emotional content and instead choose to stay calm and search out facts. We'll speak on the ballot.
Is this an intentional sleight of hand—a "look here, not there" distraction? Are they no longer able to sit down and have civil discourse, solve problems, and lead with integrity as we elected them to do? I don't know the answers to these questions; I’m just as bewildered by the spectacle as you are.
What I do know is, we have major problems in our country. I cruise news from other countries and from what I gather this left and right divide is repeating all over the world.
All I can do is what I'm doing now, showing up in my personal life and for those in my circle. Being the best I can be along the way, showing kindness and grace as much as possible to those around me and to myself. While writing a lot of terrible poetry, telling stories, creating visual art with my written words and blogging every Sunday on X in a post called SundayX.
Along the way, I also occasionaly comment on socials as a constituent or write letters to those that hold office in my district and of course vote. That's all I can really do as a citizen.
By the way, I believe our city, county, and state elections will be more crucial in years to come than national elections. Just me, but I feel like this is going to be talked about more in the days, months, and years to come.
A lot needs to change for the better and until someone is elected to office that will follow through bringing the meaningful change this country needs, nothing will change.
Not ever again will I jump on one side or the other when biology teaches the left and right work together for optimal functioning of the whole.
I watch and observe current events and pray accordingly.
That's all I can do.
We will see better days, eventually.
Maybe we don't need a leading sheep to show us the way. Maybe the best predictor of the future is simply how we treat the person standing right in front of us.
Thanks for reading this far.
